The Chrysler Corporation created the 2-door-only "J" body in 1980 from a barely-modified "M" body platform. The cars shared the same wheelbase and driveline options as the "M" body, but featured drastically altered sheet metal. The Chrysler Cordoba and identical Dodge Mirada were produced from the beginning, with the Chrysler Imperial name also being assigned to the "J" body the following year. The Imperial's headlights were now concealed behind covers, and the tail lights were slim and flat, distantly resembling the new Diplomat/Gran Fury/Caravelle tail light design. The Imperial also had some minor internal design changes, but clearly was a "J" body. These three cars were produced only through 1983, when Chrysler shook up the "M" body line names for the last major time and trimmed driveline options on the "M" body to the 318 V8 and 3-speed Torqueflite auto transmission.
